Heath Gallery New York presents Rise, a group art exhibition
“Because each had discovered years before that they were neither white nor male, and that all freedom and triumph was forbidden to them, they had set about creating something else to be.” — Toni Morrison, Sula
RISE, May 8, 2021 - May 29, 2021 features the work of 12 Black women artists whom work in oil, acrylic, mixed media, photography, collage, assemblage, fabric and glass. Their work is Black art because they are Black creators. A sizable number of works in this exhibition are not figurative, allowing us to broaden the definition of what it means to create Black art. Themes explored include: artistic intersection, social identity and duality, the environment, healing, preserving narratives, suffering, spirituality and the search for meaning and beauty. RISE is a testament to the proclivity of Black women to recreate, to recover, to reclaim, to restore and to rise through life’s circumstances. Given the difficult times we have all been through and are still in, I am excited to present these artists.
