April: Ma’Laysia Martin

Name: Ma'Laysia Martin

Grade: 12

Location: Los Angeles, CA

I'm Ma'Laysia! My favorite style to paint is realistic portraits. I like to accurately capture my subject and show off our features. I enhance the portrait with saturated colors and deep shadows. I want to inspire people and spread self love - love for our features and culture. Younger me would’ve loved to see pretty paintings of people who looked like me. I know how it feels to struggle with self love and appreciation so I paint positive portraits for people so they no longer have to feel how I felt.

What does being a Black girl who paints mean to you?

Being a black girl who paints means using my identity as a matter of mass self representation. I take our culture and beauty and transfer it on canvas. It means creativity and love.
